Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett 6′-7″ 250lbs
Here is a link from a story on Dallas Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is calling him out to have a better off season and get more focused. This is the same player that Jones reportedly did not want to trade to the Bengals before the 2009 season. I’m thinking he will be more inclined to wheel and deal this time around. Bennett has all the skills to be a top TE, but he is a little immature. Sometimes a change of scenery will help, sometimes a bigger role in the offense will help, sometimes growing up will help as well. I’ve seen players do this when they know that there is a superstar player in front of them on the depth chart and they feel they should get more playing time. With all that being said, the Bengals should make that call again and see if something can be worked out.

JT- what would you offer for this guy? I have just never seen him do anything spectacular. I don’t think he is worth a 2nd that the Cowboys spent on him. What were the Bengals offering?

Matt… rumors were that we offered a 2nd originally, but Jerry Jones wanted a 1st and a 3rd for him. Some claim we threw in the 3rd and were offering a 2nd+3rd for him.
Whatever the case i think its all way too much for this guy.
I’d give up a 3rd but only a 3rd, maybe a 3 and 7 HAHA. The reason i say this is because it would still be like a draft pick for the most part ( i realize at least he has NFL experience). He is still raw, and we need someone who can help right away. Now if Reggie Kelly can bounce back, then maybe he is worth a shot in the dark (i didnt realize he was only 22 still), talk about young talent that could blow up, maybe i would give a 3 and 5 or simply a 2nd.
JT, here’s my thoughts… If Reggie Kelly is ready for camp, go after this guy because of his age, him and Coffman can develop together. If Kelly isnt ready, we need to go after a guy who’s proven (i.e. Scheffler, Scaife, etc) because we cant wait on projects, what do you think?

This is certainly the year to go after Bennett, I think he’s worth the Bengals 2nd. He is a little bit of a gamble, but you’d have to talk to him, see where he’s at, how mature he is, and how quickly he could pick up the Bengals offense. I think Bennett is thought of as a more complete TE, and if he’s smart, he might be the long term answer for the Bengals.
I think that Scheffler would be a good pick-up, but I’m not sure he’s everything that we (on this board) are making him out to be. I think he could give them more of what they wanted from Utecht, but not what Kelly gave them.
I know the Bengals offense was pretty complex and might be hard to learn for a TE. You also have to evaluate the options against what you have. How much better will Froschi and Coffman be, how healthy will Kelly be, etc. Froschi didn’t look too bad late in the season, might not be starter material but could make a quality back-up.
Another interesting side to this, I have to wonder how well Mike Brown and Jerry Jones get along. I have a feeling they are always at odds in the owners meetings. The Bengals make so few trades anyway, it would be hard to tell if that impacts negotiations.

Bennett would be a good pick up though I agree that you have to wonder about the relationship between Brown and Jones being part of the problem, they don’t seem to like each other too much. Scheffler isn’t the star that people are making him out to be. He would be a good pick up though. He is tough, he’s a decent blocker and a solid receiver. Not special but well rounded and not much of a gamble. I’m surprised that Coffman is really looked at as a TE, in college he was really more of a big slot receiver and that would be good to have on the field for the Bengals.

Hopefully the only reason that Coffman wasn’t playing was that he was hurt. Marvin kept saying that he needed to learn things like blocking and special teams but he could have been used in a similar way to Henry ( who didn’t play special teams and didn’t block much). I realize he isn’t as fast as Henry but he is fast enough and tall and has very good hands. You can’t tell me that a guy like that couldn’t stretch the field from the slot and open up things underneath for Chad, Coles, Caldwell or a HB coming out of the backfield into the flat.

While I agree that Coffman could have been used in the slot, it’s not to stretch the field. Coffman isn’t as fast as a WR, so the D wouldn’t give him a big cushion, and it would take him longer to get down field and the play would be over. So he doesn’t open up the underneath plays for the WRs. Good play design could use him to clear out a portion of the field or pull a S away from double coverage. Good TEs create mismatches against LBs or Ss trying to cover. The D could switch to a nickel package, but his height might still be a mismatch. The idea would be for him to help in the running game, as he should be a better blocker than a WR. So a 3 WR set with Coffman in the Slot would spread the field, and possibly spring some longer runs. Coffman does have good speed and size to go along with good hands, so he would be a tough receiver over the middle and a good redzone target. If he’s any good, stays healthy, and really picks up the offense, the Bengals could use him in a variety of ways such as the traditional 2 TE set, as a TE, an H back, etc. plus he could be split out wide. Of course, I’m getting ahead of myself since he has yet to be active for a regular season game.

Sounds like I missed a good game last night, I have been working a lot and have not seen much of the playoffs, I went to bed early and set the DVR to tape the last half of the game, but for some reason it didn’t tape even though it showed it was recording when I turned the TV off. I’ve missed several shows like that lately, not sure what the deal is since most of them tape okay.

Speaking of players we should trade for, how about Osi Umenyiora?
WR’s and TE’s I think would be easier to find in the draft than a stud pass rushing DE like Osi, who “might” be on the market…

Osi would be a good addition, but I don’t think u will have to trade for him. He is a back up with the Giants, and they will prob release him

Not to get in an argument with Ron, but Henry ran a 4.5 40 and Coffman ran a 4.7. You can’t tell me that a guy that big and tall running a 4.7 straight down the middle of the field wouldn’t stretch the field. He isn’t as fast a some wideouts but we aren’t talking about Bobby Williams here either. As far as being able to block to help the running game, that sounds good on paper but from what everyone says, the guy can’t block so that kills that idea. I do agree though that his biggest strength should be creating mismatches with LB’s and safeties. One way or the other, we won’t know till he gets on the field. Or maybe I should say ” IF “.

Yeah JT I’ll take a little Beast Marshall with a side of Martellus Bennett this off season!

Great call JT – I CAN’T WAIT to see this offense with a few more weapons next year, and this would be a great addition.
I’m curious to see what you have to say about Mardy Gillyard. Would he be worth the late first round pick? Would he still be there end of second round? Guess it depends on the combine.

No, I wouldn’t draft Mardy with a #1. I say with his return skills, he’s a second round pick at best. But will prob go somewhere between a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
