Marshall Plan??
By John Thornton- I’ve been getting asked what direction the Bengals should go this offseason. It’s pretty simple to me. The Bengals need a lot of things to remain competitive in the AFC North. They can’t do what they did last year and expect to get the same results. It’s similar to what happened to the 2009 Miami Dolphins, they didn’t improve enough from what they did in 2008 to be a playoff team in 2009. The Bengals need to honestly look at their roster and make tough decisions and a few bold moves. Are they good enough on offense to be able to handle a 1st place schedule? In some ways yes, but overall, no. The Bengals running game is really built for the playoffs, but just having that running game during the regular season will cause them to have more close games, and comebacks like the team had in 2009. And I’m not sure the Bengals can have the same results if that happened again. Not because they won’t be talented enough to do it, but you can’t count on the same things happening late in games again. Things like Limas Sweed dropping a sure TD pass that leaves you in the game, or Ray Lewis going for Chad’s head on the last drive and getting a personal foul. Those things happen, but it’s not a every game or every year kind of thing. The football gods are funny like that. I say the Bengals need to push their chips all in and go for it. Leave no doubt in the division and create some space between the teams while they have it. The running game is fine, so I would look to other areas of the offense that could improve to make this team even better in 2010.
If it were me, I would go after one of two WR’s this off season. Broncos WR Brandon Marshall or Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin. Both are difference makers that won’t drop balls and would take over the role as the teams “No. 1″ WR. And I only say “No.1 WR” in terms of attention that other teams give them. It really doesn’t matter who gets the title, just so that defenses respect everybody on the field like they used to do. That is not a knock at Chad, but teams can scheme to take him away too easy. He needs legit help, in the form of another WR who is as good or better than him. This will help prolong Chad’s career and it will help the passing game be more productive. Imagine Chad getting single coverage from a #2 CB, who would win that on every down? Chad would. Having average WR’s opposite of Chad didn’t work this year. Carson Palmer had trouble consistently getting balls to guys who struggled getting separation from defenders. Carson needs to play better too, but he also is a QB that needs a good supporting cast. Getting either of these two WRs are going to take giving up draft picks, but I would give up a 2nd and 3rd pick for either guy. I would give up the 21st pick for Marshall if thats what it takes. Each guy will want a big contract in return, I would offer a 3 yr or 4 yr deal worth a little more than what Coles got last year. And of course I would dump Coles. That experiment was a mistake. He wasn’t the right fit. He is a good player, but when he and Carson are still not on the same page during the playoffs, something is wrong. I don’t blame Coles or the Bengals, that happens all the time in the NFL. But holding onto a mistake because you don’t want to admit it is where teams get in trouble. Drafting a WR in round one is a possibility as well, but if you think that none of the guys at that draft slot will give you what Marshall of Boldin will give you over the next 3 years, then go the trade route.
Receiving TE Tony Scheffler (6-5, 250)
I would also try to trade for a TE as well. The two that come to mind are Broncos TE Tony Scheffler and Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett. Both guys are veteran players who are dual threats. Bennett is a better blocker but he has some maturity issues. Scheffler doesn’t like playing for the Broncos so he is ready to leave. He would be huge for Carson. Both guys are 6-5 and they can run. Adding TE’s of this nature will not only allow the Bengals to continue to run the ball at a high level, but it will allow Carson Palmer to have a better option in the middle of the field when teams stack the box to stop that running game. This will also give the Bengals offense some space in the red zone.
Defensive outlook coming later…..

JT- completely agree. I think the Bengals need to go all in and the draft will not be the best route. Rookie receiver and TEs just don’t bring enough their first year. Give Denver first and second round pick and take Schefler and Marshall. I think with Marshall you will have to pay him like a top 5 receiver because I think he is one. He really is a steal at this point. How many 26 year old pro bowlers are available? I think Chad only has one year left and I think deep down he will want to leave.

I would go after one of those players in the offseason, but I wouldn’t trade the #21 pick.
Marshall I think is the only player that is worth the #21 overall pick, but when you include the new contract you will have to give him and his immaturity at times, I would be hesitant. A 2nd and/or 3rd round pick definitely.
I really hope we use the #21 pick on Jermaine Gresham…

Excellent call on the bengals going after Marshall. I said the same thing to my friends at work last week. I also included Vincent Jackson, Steve Breaston (a stretch), or Miles Austin. All free agents this year (unless i missed something) granted Austin and Jackson would be hard to get but still. Coles has to go unfortunately but getting a legit threat to go with Ocho is HUGE!!!

Question is, do you really believe the Bengals can and would be players for either one of those two (Bolden and Marshall)? Marshall has had off the field problems, and Bolden will demand top dollar. What’s your take?

I like your ideas JT. We definitetly need a reciever or 2 and a TE. I would go after Marshall or Boldin but if not them two there are a couple FA’s they should look at. There are some quality recievers in FA but they are on the backside of their careers. Antonio Bryant and Lee Evans should be looked at. Bryant was the only recieving threat in TB and still had good seasons. Another guy who is a FA is Malcom Floyd from SD. He is a tall reciever with good speed. He is older than i thought but would still be a solid pickup and an improvement at the position. Even if they get any of these guys they should still draft a WR in the 1st round unless it is used for Marshall. Would also love to get Scheffler.

JT –
I think you’re onto something when you say that looking at anyone but an elite WR who is proven and ready to go on day 1 is a mistake. This isn’t a team that can sit and develop for a few years – #85 is getting older, Benson has shown he’s not indestructible (why LJ wasn’t used more baffles me), and contract renewals are coming up on JJoe and Hall. I would be surprised if MB half-asses this by going for a talented “project” with “limitless upside”. Looting the Broncos’ receiving options would be sweet.
Here’s a Q for you, before Charles unloads his draft brilliance – other than our key FA pickups, what positions do you think the Bengals should target in the first 4-5 rounds? Not necessarily who to fill those spots with, but where we need to look.

I love your reasoning, I just wonder, can the Bengals dump Coles even if they want to from the standpoint of guaranteed money? We absolutely need to go out and get one of those two receivers and dump Coles. The Bengals standing pat, would be the same thing as losing ground, because they aren’t going to win the division or even have a winning record with a passing game that doesn’t exist, even with Mike Zimmer’s defense.
I don’t think Chad would have a problem with one of those receiver’s coming in, he will never say it, but he knows he’s not going to enjoy the same production and is not considered a top tier receiver as he was in past and this as you say will improve and prolong his career.
On the offensive side of the ball, I don’t really see them making much in the way of change with the personnel on the offensive line. It’s really is a matter of who of the existing group is going to get the playing time at right tackle. Andre Smith needs to win the job and would be expected to be an upgrade in pass blocking. Is it possible for the Bengals to be a better pass blocking offense with this personnel?

I say they try to get both recievers. I know that is a little over the top, but its not impossible…..

January 18th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
I say go for defense hard. They DL, S, CB. Take the best at each position when that pick comes up. That way they can keep young talent on D and not have to overspend in FA when guys contracts are up. Only keep the super talented guys and pay them big bucks.
JT
January 18th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
I believe they will think about both guys. Scheffler for sure. Marshall would be huge. But Having Chad and Marshall will make the running game better and the passing game legit.
JT
January 18th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
The #21 pick is in no mans land. Good pick, but u are not getting top talent unless it falls to you. NFL people view 15-35 as same type players. Thats why you see teams trading those picks to teams that want to jump back in the first round and get a player they covet. They can trade that pick and get a 2nd rd pick and a first for next year.

JT-
When you say DL, do you mean DE, DT or both? They seem really deep at DE, but I am not sure any of them are difference makers. Odom probably is if he can stay healthy. Also can we really chase another CB when we have two first round picks invested there? A safety who could cover would be nice though.

JT,
Finally someone’s on board!! This is what i’ve been hoping for, now you just need to go to the bengals brass and get the deal done. Crazy to say, but i think if we got Marshall and Scheffler this could be a top 10 offense again!

January 19th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Two words: Mike. Brown. Don’t see anything like that happening, although Marshall would be unreal. Marshall and Scheffler are both FA’s too. Not sure if they have restrictions though and either could be tagged if the Broncos wanna go through that mess with disgruntled players.
Getting rid of Coles seems to be a must. Can anyone confirm these contract details?
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=nfl&id=109
Not really sure how it all works, but it would appear that he’s already made about 2/3 of his guaranteed money meaning the Bengals would be on the hook for about $3 mil if they cut him…as opposed to paying him $4.6 mil for his services in 2010.

I have been saying for a while that they need to pursue Marshall. A lot of people disagree with me b/c of his immaturity. Although I think Chad could straighten him out. I would LOVE to have Marshall here. He was good friends with Henry so maybe he’d love to be here as well and wear Henry’s # here. We’ll see. But again like someone else already said, we have to remember who our owner is. Yeah he has shown some improvement but let’s not ask too much too quickly now. LOL

The #21 pick in this years draft is going to be really valuable. The past couple of seasons the best players in that years entire draft came around that pick.
Last season Percy Harvin and Michael Oher the top two players in the draft were #22 and #23. In 2008 Chris Johnson the best player in that years draft was #24.
In this years draft Jermaine Gresham, Jason Pierre-Paul, Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, Mike Iupati, Brandon Spikes and Jahvid Best will probably all go around the #21 overall pick…

JJ…. Id rather take a proven vet than a kid in the draft, so if we gave up the #21 pick for Marshall im all for it, i dont care if he has “problems” so has about 2/3rds of our team.
jj
January 19th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Jason…, Marshall is the only guy I would consider giving up the #21 overall pick for. But I think it can be done for a later pick. I just don’t buy into the 2nd round pick is just as valuable as a late first round pick concept.
Late first round picks in the past several drafts have not just been “good” players, they have been 1st team All Pro type players. Your talking about Nick Mangold (Best Center in the NFL), Chris Johnson (Best RB), Jon Beason (Top 5 NFL LB) and that’s just the last couple of seasons.
Those type of players won’t last till our 2nd round pick.

JT you are 100% correct. We need the BEAST!!! I am a Bengals fan though and we all know how we can be with free agents. Do you think we could really compete for Marshall with other teams, JT? Please, Mr Brown, please…
Jason
January 19th, 2010 at 11:41 am
JJ, i agree, but remember when we pick in the 20′s its not the greatest (see: Chris Perry).
I also agree, B. Marshall is the only player in Free Agency i give up our 1st round pick for.
That said, im all for dumping Coles regardless, even if we cant land Marshall, i’d take one of the rookies over Coles. He’s lost a step and speed was his game.

No way I’d trust our “scouting department” (yes I put that in quotation b/c I don’t feel that department is worthy of being called a professional scouting department) to make a good pick at #21. I’d give up that pick for Marshall any day of the week. Please Mike, listen to what we’re saying. Go after that kid!

I don’t really understand what an uncapped year means, and if they reach an agreement when will the cap start again, etc. But I think this means that a team can spend what ever it wants, signing bonuses etc, and nothing carries over from year to year except the base contract, plus any yearly incentive type stuff.
So, teams like Dallas and Washington are going to pay what ever it takes and give huge bonuses, like the Yankees. And the Bengals will be like the Reds, managing to a “Budget”. So the Bengals will still hold to thier own cap because that is what is in the Budget.
This means FA will be value picks and trades are more possible.

January 19th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
I agree 100%!!!! Giving Chad help with another top receiver changes this offense completely. The offense was decent with Chris Henry on the field, and it really began struggling when his arm was broken. Having someone like Boldin or Marshall gets that advantage back plus some.
If the Bengals actually went after both a WR and a TE of the caliber you mentioned, and I would change my belief that the Ravens are the front-runners in the division going into next year. Seasoned veterans at those two spots could help the Bengals legitimately compete with teams like New England and San Diego next year.
JT, think of TE’s, do you have any knowledge on how Reggie Kelly is recovering and if he will play next year?
Ron E
January 19th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
I’m sure the Players and Agents understand all the different possibilities for contracts this year, and they have plans for each situation. I’d like to hear what some agents/players might try to do. Under contract players could renegotiate or demand a trade that gets them renegotiated. If Chad wants to go somewhere, this would be his year to try, and even though Coles looks like a bust, he should be worth something in a trade if salaries go sky high.
Also, I wonder what the owners might do to prevent the chaos of a money grab.
Ron E
January 19th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
I read that if uncapped, all Free Agents would only be able to negotiate with thier current team. So does that mean a team would have to cut or trade them for them to go to another team?
So the Redskins will have no draft picks this year

John,
They all sound good but let us get back to reality here. The bengasl always settle for second tier free agents. If there is any competition whatsoever we would lose them. We seen it with Sean Rogers going to the Browns, Warren Sapp to the Raiders, and even last year wih TJ and Stacey Andrews. Money talks and b.s walks and the bengals as we seen it in Hard Knocks, mishandled the Andre Smith deal trying to nickel and dime the situation. Some call me very skeptical when it comes to the bengals, but i have not being proven wrong with the bad decision making. To this day, Marvin hasn’t acknoledge that he made a mistake with passing on Deshon Jackson and pick Jerome Simpson. Until they admit their mistake and correct them, it would be the same old thing over and over again.

I completely agree, especially about the trading away of high picks. Recent draft history suggests the Bengals aren’t capable of drafting picks in the higher rounds and getting any sort of production from them (see: Odell Thurman, Jerome Simpson, Chris Perry, Keiwan Ratliff, Kenny Irons, David Pollack, et. al.) but seem consistently to catch lightning in a bottle on the back end of the draft (see: Bernard Scott, T.J. Houshmanzadeh, J. Fanene, Chinendum Ndukwe). Why not trade and get a proven commodity instead of paying high round draft choices to pull splinters out of their rear-end. I also agree that what worked this year probably won’t work next year with the Browns poised to get better (lots and lots of draft picks for Holmgren to work with), the Steelers reloading and Baltimore’s young offense getting better. My bet is that the Brown family figures they’ve already signed their big free agent in Zimmer and they will ‘build through the draft’ which has obviously worked so well since 1992!

These ideas sound great, but it will never happen—not with Mike Brown running the team. Making a profit is more important than making the playoffs.

I don’t agree with all of you. Yes I would give up the 21st pick for Marshall. Hell I would even throw in a third. But the Bengals can pick well with mid-to late picks. I think J Jo and Leon Hall are doing ok. Anyone who doesn’t think Marhsall is worth it is nuts. Dude is a game changer. He is a pro bowler and is 26. Those don’t come available too often.

I would love to pick up Brandon Marshall for a #1 and #3 pick. However, if you are ‘stuck’ with the 21st pick in the draft, Golden Tate from ND would have to be my pick. I think Dez Bryant is gone by then, and Golden Tate kind of reminds me of DeSean Jackson from Philly – who, BTW, could have been a Bengal if we wouldn’t have went for Jerome Simpson, instead. How would Jackson look in a Bengal uniform right now?
Charles
January 19th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
I think the Broncos would trade Marshall for just a one. The #1 and #3 is negotiable. Sometimes teams do just a #2 if there is no action for the player. I like Tate, but he’s not a great route runner. More of a strong guy. Carson needs a big target thats strong. Marshall would get those balls that Coles couldn’t get to.
Charles
January 19th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Teams trade their picks for veteran players if they go into the process and decide that the guy that they want, wont be there. Bryant, and the kid from Kansas are two guys that would be worth it at the WR position, but I would take Marshall. Bryant won’t be there. And the Bengals need to win now. Developing WR hasn’t been a strong point lately, so I wouldnt count on a rookie that need work.
Charles
January 19th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Sapp would have been a disaster here. Good non move. Andrews is on the bench in Philly. Shaun Rodgers would have been the biggest addition in Bengals history.

Jason
January 19th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
JT or Charles,
What other TE do you see the Bengals going after?
I know everyone wants Scheffler, but if we cant get him who else?
I saw Bo Scaife is available, he seems to be an all-around guy, not a game breaker, but a reliable target. We need an upgrade to say the least.
Any progress on Chase Coffman? If he still cant block are we going to at least try him in the slot?
Any word on us keeping Tank Johnson and Roy Williams. We need Roy, but can he stay healthy, if not we need to use a high pick on a safety for coverage purposes.

The 2 best Tight Ends in the draft are Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma and Aaron Hernandez from the University of Florida. There will be a debate this off season as to what position the Bengals should use with their first round pick. Personally I do not believe in drafting Tight Ends in the first round, past history has proven that teams should use first round picks on premier positions. Jermaine Gresham has shown great potential and flashed playmaking ability iin his career, but he is coming off a season ending injury. Teams should be careful drafting injured players to high. The Bengals certainly need an upgrade at the Tight End position, I would look for a vet and to draft a young player to develop for the future. Chase has not shown enough to get on the field, as the speed and strength of the game has overwhelmed him. He played in a spread system in college that rarely asked him to block from a 3 point stance, so blocking has been a major hang up in his development. Hopefully another season in the system and weight room can help him improve enough to contribute next season.

Charles –
Do you think the differences between the Mizz spread and the Florida spread-option is enough to warrant taking Hernandez? Did he block for Tebow enough to prove that he can, or will he struggle the same ways Coffman has?
Ron E
January 20th, 2010 at 8:30 am
Uncapped means Washington, Oakland, Dallas, etc will pay what ever it takes, if they can work a trade for those Free Agents they want. The key is, they have to pick and choose because they only have so much to trade in return. You have to figure that Cincinnati has no chance at Marshall, because other teams will be willing to give up more to get him, knowing they will pay more to keep him. The Draft picks will be valuable to Mike Brown this year because he can get guys that may be productive and much cheaper than top FAs.
Bengals have had thier share of luck and bad luck with players from all over the draft, it’s just that the higher the pick the more it hurts if they don’t work out. Some of the guys may have been great picks, but got hurt, and you can’t help that. With the 21st pick, they should get a good value pick, and the potential you have from that player is great considering the cost. Of course, if they can load up on 2nd round picks, that’s even better. With a 2nd rounder, you get a guy that could start by end of season and you pay them very little compared to the 1st round guys.
Ron E
January 20th, 2010 at 9:14 am
The Bengals have not really had any luck at drafting TEs, the Jury is still out on Chase, but the 3rd round seems to be a popular spot for them to take a TE. I think I would trust them more to take a 1st rounder, in that, other people agree that they are NFL ready. Or take a late round value pick that doesn’t hurt if they bust. Really though, I think Free Agency is the way to go for them with TEs.
