The Bengals had a good season in 2009.  I know people are upset with the playoff loss at this point, but once that sting wears off, we will look back at the season as a success.  As I wrote last week, this team was a much stronger team at mid season.  They were fresh, they had depth, and they could come from behind and win games.  But in the second half of the season, we saw a different group.  The team played hard, but when they needed to step on the gas, there wasn’t much there.  I think that the injuries on defense started to mount, and the back up players couldn’t handle playing full time as starters.  A lack of turnovers also made the defense have to work extra hard to stop people.  The Bengals offense had to work too hard to score as well.  They were pretty good at running the ball, but points come out of the passing game, and the passing game was nowhere to be found at the end of the season.  The loss of Chris Henry hurt the team in two ways.  On the field, WR’s had trouble getting separation from DBs, and when Chad Ochocinco did get separation, Carson Palmer had trouble getting him the ball.  They guys were just a little off.  And off the field, the travel took its toll on the players.  The west coast trip and the trip to New Orleans seemed to put the team in a funk that they couldn’t recover from physically.  The guys have a lot to be proud of, and I think they will feel that way in a few days.  But “what could have been” will eat at the all off season.   The AFC isn’t that strong, and if the Bengals could have beaten the Jets, a rematch with the Chargers was waiting for them.  And the Ravens can beat the Colts…..you get what I’m getting at.  Now it’s time to evaluate the season, make some tough decisions, and build a strong team for next year.

In your opinion what is the most important off season move the Bengals need to make to return to the playoffs next year? Resign Zimmer? A speed receiver? Something else?

JT,

Based on your twitter exchange with Willie, you’d like to see Hue Jackson as the OC. I agree with you, and have wanted to see a new OC for the past 5 years.

What changes to the offense do you think need to be made and do you see any changes actually being made?

By the way, I actually thought Bratkowski did a better job gameplanning this year than the last two years, but his scheme is just outdated. We need to blend a smashmouth running game, with more of a spread/west coast passing game, and get someone who has an idea how to keep defenses guessing.

The change in DC’s has demonstrated that when the right man is in charge, good things are evidenced clearly. Despite most of the payroll dedicated to offense, we have seen regression by CP and the receivers. The talents of Chad are not utilized as they should be.

Much has been stated about the inability of the WR’s to get open and the inability of the oline to protect. I say the extreme level of predictability contributes greatly to the lack of success of both of these. The receivers not getting separation is partly their fault and partly on the play design, set up of the play by previous plays, and the routes and timings of the receivers around that receiver. Chad should have been in motion more to help free him up, for one.

The oline is not the level of the Jets line, but there are things that can be done to counter that, i.e. shorter drops, screens and drawplays to slow the rush, misdirections and play action (hard sell) to provide the defense something to think about instead of going downhill everytime.

It is time for the offensive equivalent of Mike Zimmer to be sought and of Chuck Bresnahan to move on. I actually have more excuses on behalf of Bresnahan (injuries) than can be conjured for Bob.

I predicted 11-5, but good season nonetheless. I hope the offseason is fruitful to move to the next level.

Hmmm, I would take the highest rated WR,TE, DE. Which ever comes first. Gonna be hard to get free agents this year with cap issues, but I try to get a pass catching TE in FA and still draft one high. Revamp the position. Revamp WR core. Coles may be gone, Simpson gone, and draft a Golden Tate or a big strong WR. And the DE position has to be seriously evaluated. Is Odom gonna be able to return? Fananae wore down as the starter. Who is other DT with Peko? If its Pat, get him in shape and roll with him. Tank didn’t do much, not a priority. Need another DT. Gotta get rushers all over. Michael Johnson didn’t have the year I expected. FInd a position for him and keep him there till he masters it.

John… Can u give me any hope that Mike Brown will step (and make a PR statement) and make a real run to keep Zimmer? I know it comes down to money and opportunity but the Redskins are a train-wreck and Marvin made a similar jump by going to DC before coming here… Any hope at all? And… Keep up the great work… Great site and insight….

I can’t say I disagree with anything above, and JT you’re pretty much on the money. The only thing is, I have a hard time firing a person when they did what they were told to do.

Bratkowski was following orders, and when you think about it, he may have gotten the best out of this team that he could get while doing what he was told. The OL may not be as good as it seemed, you shuffled guys around, your #1 Draft pick slated to play RT held out, they lost what may have been their best WR to free agency, and the most talented WR to IR, Coles was a bust….. And I get sick of hearing it, this year Bratkowski’s play calling was not predictable, other years yes, very, but not this year. I kind of want to see what the Offense would do the year after this experiment, what Marvin and Brat will do.

That said, maybe this would be the best year to make a change. I’ve never been that impressed with Bratkowski’s play design. You see other teams run plays that put their WR’s in favorable match ups and allow the QB to pick the D apart. You see other teams punish the blitz with a quick slant or screen. I don’t think I want Mike Martz or Ron Turner, but maybe Hue Jackson, Ken Zampese, or someone else.

It was a good season, if you consider all the injuries and personal losses, this team really did overcome a lot. They played a tough schedule, swept the division, and finished 10-6. In previous years, we would have been lucky to be 6-10. It was sad to see the season end, but I think this team finally grew up. I hope they can keep it up next year.

well, crap! That was disappointing. I will say that for the frist time in ages, the fans actually figured out that being loud was their job, and that it wasn’t limited to just when the other team’s O was at the line. Mid-late 3rd Qtr, fans finally figured out to be loud the whole series, resulting in two Jets penalties, and even made noise on the punt (which is where fans previously figured they were supposed to take a break). That was a positive. On the field, lots of positives, but still too many negatives. Coles and Caldwell couldn’t catch a cold at an H1N1 clinic. How does one player fumble twice in one half by doing EXACTLY THE SAME THING with the ball both times??? Why does CP force that ball into Chad for Revis to pick it? Lots of bad throws by CP. Should he have have arm surgery after all? Or is the recovery time just longer than we were led to believe? If this CP is the best we can expect, he’s not the one to lead this team, and its time to start grooming his replacement. If Simpson is gone as you say, JT, why did they not go find a street FA who could maybe have at least gotten on the field and helped???? You worry about Odom, I also worry about Rey, will his ankle injury be a chronic issue that will limit the ceiling on his talent/game? Could we please get a K who can? And maybe while we’re at it, either make sure the same person can consistently put KO’s into the end zone, or consider carrying someone who can? We had way too many opposing drives get started near midfield this season because our kicker sucks. Again injuries hurt us, but we also managaed to get quite a few otherwise backups some seasoning, which will hopefully help next season. Gotta throw out all stops to keep Zimmer, and find a new O Coord. to pick up the pieces; maybe time for a new ST coach too……

I have no clue what Graham was trying to do with that kickoff in the 2nd half that he kicked it to their 40 yard line. Pretty much gave them the ball at midfield. I know Shayne is good in the community, but we can’t accept mediocrity anymore as well as the collapses in the clutch.

The big plays returned to haunt the D. I do give Schottenheimer credit for being creative, something I can’t say about Brat. Duke got burned on the Keller play we all saw coming, D was in a bad alignment on the Shonn Greene run. A linebacker or safety needed to be on that side, can’t expect a DE alone to make that play in my opinion.

A good year by the guys, overcame a lot off the field to make the playoffs. I commend them on that, but the collapse down the stretch is what I will remember about 2009. There are a ton of holes on offense and the D needs DL depth, a FS. Offense needs a G, TE, possibly 2 WRs. I don’t see Ocho re-signing with this team so we need a WR high in the draft this year to groom as a potential #1 once Chad’s contract is up after 2010.

There is definitely some talent in the first two rounds of the draft TE wise, hopefully we’ll jump on that.

WR wise, I hate to say it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Brown takes a look at T.O. this offseason. Or maybe we can work out a TJ for Coles trade :P

We can always use some more pass rushers, so almost any DE or DT we bring in I’ll be happy with. And maybe it’s just me but if Odom is healthy next season, I think Odom and Fanene should be our starting DE’s.

So a new OC, obviously Hue Jackson is the fan favorite. I know he’s a great position coach, but not sure about his performance as an OC, play design, play calling, etc. He only had 1 year in Atl, they were limited, but it wasn’t great. I still think Hue would be the best choice, he’s familiar with the passing game we had, the players, the division, plus maybe he learned something in Atl and in Bal under Cam. Of course one bad thing, is if he comes to Cincy and does well, it’s only a matter of time before we lose him to another team as a HC.

Does Marvin still want a ball control run first offense? Does he now want a better passing game to go with the run? Does Mike Brown step in and say bring back the passing game?

So are the choices limited to Hue Jackson, Ken Zampese or other current staff member? Who are other guys that would fit this team and work well with Marvin, maybe have some connection to the team?

Hue did more for offense than just be a position coach. he really wasn’t OC in ATL, Petrino called the played. Hue is like Zimmer, strong personality that will command respect from players. Hue and Zimmer were on same staff in ATL and Hue recommended Zimmer to Marvin and Mike Brown when they were looking for DC.

If Zimmer should leave, we all hope not, but who would be candidates to fill his role? Do you promote from within, there might be a couple of options there. Also, if Jack Del Rio loses his job, he was the LB coach under Marvin in Baltimore, and Mark Duffner is the current LB coach for Jacksonville.

With the exception of losing Zimmer, I bet the Bengals don’t make any major coaching changes. If Mike Brown won’t change much after a 4-11-1 year, why on earth would he change offensive coordinators after a 10-6 year? I hope I am wrong though.

I also think serious consideration needs to be given toward a new QB.

There is nothing that tears a team apart like a QB controversy. Palmer must have something wrong with him but surely it’s easier to fix it than to get a new QB. That said, it might be time to get a late round rookie to groom. Jordan might be good for Carson, but if he’s not good enough to be a #2, then we need to start developing someone else. Maybe like a Tim Hiller from Western Michigan.

I do not think Carson has arm trouble. If he did have arm trouble he would have been somewhat limited in practice and he never was. I think his trouble came from lack of WR talent and possibly the system on offense. He was rarely allowed to get into a rythm. Carson is a QB who needs to get rid of the ball on his last step and not dance around and wait for recievers to get open. The receivers were unable to get open early allowing him to get rid of the ball. I REALLY hope Marvin and Mike Brown realize it is time for a change at OC, and also that Brown pays Zimmer what he is worth. If Marvin wanted to hire Hue Jackson last year but “found out he couldn’t” dont you think he will strive for it to happen this year JT?

Carson missed to many open throws this year. You have to remember that Carson isn’t just a warm body on the roster. The guy I believe was the third highest paid QB in the league this year and frankly; I don’t know if his salary is justified with his current level of play.

I think the Bengals are in a bad position with Carson without many good options.

I also think the contrast between him and Tom Brady in their attitude towards the fans are astounding. Carson doesn’t want to hear boos. Tom Brady said after his loss on Saturday that he doesn’t blame the fans for booing their performance. You don’t want to hear boos, then play better. The fans are paying good money and Carson in particular is reaping a huge benefit, so the least he can do is not act entitled. I would take that kind of comment much better from a player who is a late round draft pick working on his first contract, those guy’s are really putting it on the line and really don’t make a lot of money for what they do.

Carson still has it. The Chargers game was proof of that, he still has the big arm, he just doesnt have the talent around him to be good/great anymore.
When you lose T.J. + Henry and replace it with an Aged Coles and Caldwell, there is going to be significant dropoff.
A QB is only as good as his WR’s and a WR is only as good as his QB.
We need upgrades ASAP if we want the offense to turn around, a TE would be nice as well!!!
And looking at our schedule next year, we better make some noise in the offseason or it could be back to 7-9 or worse.

yes, that Chargers game made me a believer in the Bengals offense. And then the week after vs KC I lost all faith in it. Carson looked great in SD, still can’t understand why they couldn’t complete crucial passes when it counted. Not all Carson’s fault. He still has the arm and the skills.

JT, how much of the offense’s problem has to do with all the new targets? From what I understand, the offense is based on timing and the WR being in a specific spot. Back in the day, Carson had the piece of mind that Chad and TJ (and to a lesser extent his RBs and TEs) were always going to be in the right spot. Now he has all new TEs, new RBs, and several new WRs. Due to Slim’s injuries and eventual passing, Chad was the only WR on the roster that Carson had any chemistry with and who knew where to be on the field. If this is the case, shouldn’t this problem be fixed with time or do they scrap the system and use a system where Carson throws to the player and not a spot on the field?

JT

That is a valid point. But the Bengals spent a lot of time last offseason and pre season and sometimes during season, talking about how the passing game was improved and how they jelled. It never looked good IMO, and I didn’t like the approach. Never attacked the TE position once TE’s got hurt in camp. Should have traded for better option. Coles was a failure. Not a fit in this offense

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has signed a three-year contract to remain with the team, a source with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday.

Zimmer’s retention – his contract was set to expire – is considered a huge deal for a team that won the AFC North this season, largely on the strength of its defense.

Zimmer, who just completed his second season with Cincinnati, was reported to have been targeted for the defensive coordinator job in Washington under new coach Mike Shanahan. Zimmer also figured to have other suitors based on the job he has done in turning around the Bengals’ defense.

However, Zimmer’s relationship with coach Marvin Lewis, his affinity for several of his players and ownership’s commitment were factors in his decision to stay with the Bengals.

Good news – I just read that the Bengals have re-signed Mike Zimmer. I agree that they should have pursued a tight end during the season. I think they should target Tony Scheffler in free agency. He seems to be “on the outs” in Denver anyway. As far as receiver goes, I’m sure Arizona will limit the movement by placing a tender on Steve Breaston but what do you think he is worth? Would you give up a 2nd rounder for him? Lee Evans is an UFA, does he still have the speed to stretch the field? Not sure how the CBA/non-capped year affects the availability of each of these players either (which UFA will be RFA).

Well considering the history of the organization, I would say a big HELL NO to that statement. But with them re-signing Zimmer so quickly, that really shocked me. Just goes to show that this team/organization may be slightly changing for the better. In past years, I would say Zimmer would have already signed with DC by now for lots of money b/c Mikey boy would have low balled him so badly it insulted him and Zim split w/o thinking twice. But they apparently came with enough money to show Zim he means a lot to this team so he didn’t think twice on signing with us. So maybe, just maybe, the Marshall deal can happen. A man can dream right? :-) Oh and while we’re dreaming, can we throw Bratkowski onto Ft Washington Way while we’re at it? :-)

Is there a Salary Cap this year? Is there a big cap hit if we cut Coles? He didn’t exactly impress this year on the field, but it sounded like he is a good influence and maybe after a year he will get better. I doubt there is any way they pay big money to another WR if money is tied up in Coles, and I don’t think I want them to try to clear cap room to take chance on another guy. I don’t know how many times I see WRs go to different teams and flop. Randy Moss did poorly in Oakland, but great in NE. TO did well pretty much everywhere except last season, but there are few other examples. If you look for a WR in the draft, some WR’s step in right away, but most do not. So Chad, Coles, Caldwell are our best options next season. Maybe add a couple TEs and go 2 TE sets more often.

Brian

To heck with the Bengals going after Marshall or another top WR or even drafting a WR high. What I would like to see is the team spend their money on a top tier FA TE (Watson, Scheffler, etc) and play them as a traditional TE. Then split Coffman out into the slot and use him more like Indy uses Dallas Clark. While he may not be the deep threat option most say we need, his 6’6” frame and sure hands would give Carson a nice target over the middle. Both he and the FA TE would cause serious mismatches with safeties and LBs, freeing Chad and Caldwell up on the perimeter. I am guessing this is what the plan was with Utecht and Kelly. If they are going to get a new TE, get him early so that he and Carson develop chemistry and learn the system. Even with the FA, Coffman, and Foschi, I would still like a middle round rookie ala Graham from Wisc or Peek from Bama. Then keep 4 active TEs on the 53 man roster.

When it comes to TE dont forget about Coffman. He may not of healed up very well from his college injury and should be good to go next year. From what I heard he was not the best blocker but the team must have a plan for him. They drafted him last year knowing he may not be a great blocker and also knowing they were changing the offensive system to a more run based system. I could be wrong and he could be a bust but dont give up on him yet.

Glad to hear Zimmer resigned, he’s welcome at my house for dinner anytime he wants, you too JT.

I figured Coffman was the Utecht contingency plan if and when Utecht got hurt again. So yes, I think he was to be the 2nd TE on 2 TE sets once he got comfortable with that. I just don’t know how much his injury/surgery prevented him from playing and how much of it was that he was not ready. Based on the way they handled Jerome Simpson, I’m concerned that Coffman might not be active all year 2 either.

And I agree with you Brian, they had so much need for reliable receivers, why not line him up like he did in college?

JT… you think Brat stays just because of the connection with Zimmer? Zimmer seems to have a lot of pull already within our organization, for some reason i think that’s why Brat stays. Otherwise, i think he would have been fired by now and Kenny Z. would be our O-Coord.
What are the chances he gets the Bears job and Kenny Anderson comes back?
Looking at the FA list, there are several good WR’s and TE’s available this year, what’s the top priority in Free Agency that would lead us to the best possible draft (meaning some or what positions might we want a vet or some experience than a rookie in a draft). I’m thinking TE we want some experience, how about Bo Scaife?

I’d be very surprised if the drop Coles after just one year. Draft class is not supposed to be great, FA’s will be expensive, and I’d expect them to give him some more time to gel with Carson. While he was not overwhelming and did not earn all that money in year one; I could see him getting more solid with more time. Plus he seemed to be a great blocker which is a big plus since we’re now run-first.

Simpson is the one that I think the really have to figure out. It’s a waste to lock up a roster spot on a WR that doesn’t play special teams and will only be able to get on the field if Chad gets hurt. I sure hope they told him he’s on the bubble and he’d better learn a few other WR spots in the offseason or be sent packing. Big hands and vertical jumps don’t mean squat if you can’t even get on the 45-man roster.
