Revolving door at OT needs to slow down

December 8th, 2009 | Bengals

The Bengals are playing three guys at offensive tackle during games now.  In fact, Dennis Rolland gets his number called by the PA guy during games more than most of the wide receivers.  Andre Smith and Anthony Collins are the other guys coming in and out at the right tackle position.  In my humble opinion, the Bengals should settle in on a guy and roll with it.  It seems that the offense is focused more on confusing opposing defenses with these unbalanced formations, than they are on fixing the passing game.  Now don’t get me wrong, defenses have trouble identifying what OL is where and what that means on each play, but I really think that this may be hurting the passing game.  The Bengals are having so much success running the ball, that as soon as the passing game shows signs of trouble, they go back to heavy run.  This is why they dominate the time of possession, but lack points to show for it.  Points usually come out of the passing game.  The Bengals will win the AFC North, and they will host a home playoff game, so I think they should really use these last four games to focus on the passing game.  Teams are not going to let them pound the ball like this come January.

Very good point JT. Never really thought about that to be honest. It does seem like once they started rotating guys quite a bit, that’s when the passing game went downhill. Excuse my ignorance on this but why do they call him an eligible receiver every time he’s put in? Is that common or is that just a Bratkowski thing?

I’ve been thinking the same thing JT. I also think the constant rotating keeps them from being able to run as much uptempo style, which seems to help the passing game. When we speed up the tempo, Carson gets in a rhythm and the passing game does better. I think the constant rotation is hurting that.

Maybe use the uptempo style to build a lead and then slow things down with the unbalanced lines, etc… and just pound on teams.

Could this be why they are having so many pre-snap penalties? Maybe they are confusing Andrew Whitworth more than opposing defenses.

We turned the “#74 is reporting as eligible” thing into what we lovingly call the Dennis Roland Drinking Game. Every time the referee reports #74 is eligible, you have to take a drink. Every time Dennis misses his block, you have to take another drink; if Dennis makes his block, take 2 drinks. Should they ever dare to throw the ball to #74, you better get the beer vendor on speed dial!

A-freakin’-men. I’m sick of the group-think narrative that keeps getting perpetuated around the sports media that the Bengals “play-down” to their opponents. This team has won and lost with the same formula all year, run the ball and play good defense. With the exception of the Bears game, inconsistencies in the passing game have limited scoring all year and is keeping games close.

I agree whole-heartedly with your tempo comment. It seems whenever Carson drops back, its taking him forever to get rid of the ball. Is he being indecisive? Are the receivers not getting open? Or are the plays just taking too long to develop? I’ve always though option 3 was more to blame than anything. I’d like to see more 3-step-drops-and-hit-the-quick-slant type of plays to help Carson get into more of a rhythm.

One of the kids we had at the game kept asking, “why do they keep saying that #74 is reporting” lol. It’s way too much.

They have to announce that, its a league rule. He has to report. The Bengals are doing a good job of confusing defenses, but that usually results in a 5-7 yd gain. Time to get chunks. They really lack weapons for Carson. No real speed on field. No threat at the TE position.

Carson has sort of played do to his options. Chad gets taken away, and then it goes bad. The Bengals used to have many options in the passing game, now they are down to maybe two guys? Just think, Chad, TJ, Henry, Walter, K Washington(who is still making plays for Ravens), C Perry, Schobel, Tab Perry. And an OL that kept him clean. Carson is deadly that way. I like the cast they have now, but as far as making plays, not the same. They are a hard working smart group that can fight and grind. But they are leaving themselves a small margin for error with this style of play. Can they win a super bowl like this? Yes, but it will be much harder than the other top teams. I’m not down on this group, just pointing out that the passing game needs to be worked on in these last four weeks. Something is not right with it.

Is Chad no longer a speed threat or is he being taken out of games by double teams? TJ would be huge right now if we still had him. I remember at the beginning of the year the team tried to play it off that Coles was more dynamic than TJ. Coles couldn’t carry TJs jock strap. I thought dude was kind of a jerk when he left but I miss him. Why aren’t they using Caldwell in TJs role like they did at the beginning of the season? A legitimate TE probably takes away the majority of the complaints about the Bengals offense.

Chad was never really a deep threat. His game is running great routes and catching 10-15 yd passes. They always had a fast guy to compliment him. I think the Coles signing was made as a shot a TJ. He’s a good player, but I thought Caldwell was ready to take over that role. His growth is prob being stunted by Coles being there. It would have saved the team lots of money. Now they are on the hook for paying Coles. I think he can still play, but if they were going to have this kind of offense, why pay top dollar for Coles when he won’t get many balls? They don’t need a great TE, but one that can get open would help. Schobel was really good at that, and Kelly wasn’t bad either.

JT –

We’ve got Chad, Caldwell, Coles, Cosby, and Purify. Simpson too, if you want to get technical. Being an Ohio State fan, I know that Cosby can catch passes. So can Leonard. Why isn’t Brat stealing pages from the Patriots’ playbook? I know we’ve lost Mini-Moss, but you and I have been talking for weeks that we’re winning games with the clock, not with points. If the coaches can’t figure out how to put up 28-35 points a game, we’re going nowhere in the playoffs. Considering how many guys have 1-year contracts, I don’t know if MB will get another chance like this for a few years.

Look at the UC-Pitt game. Pitt dominated the clock, ran the ball down the Bearcats’ throat. The only reason the Bearcats had a chance to win is because they could put points on the board lightning fast. The Colts, Saints, and once upon a time the Vikings, are all able to do that. But we can’t close the deal on drives like Pitt did.

Or here’s a crazy thought – why not have Roland catch a pass? He’s eligible, and nobody’s expecting it. Might just be crazy enough to work.

PS – I bet now you like my question about Peko. I’m still curious as to what you think.

I don’t think they need to score that many to win in the playoffs. They could very easily win with this approach. But I really think that the “ability” to win via pass is not there. That’s all I’m saying. The way they play now is ok, but I would like to see the approach that Cowher took at the end of the 2005 season. Teams geared up to stop the pass and that opened up the pass and allowed them to get leads. Then they sucked the air out of the ball. The Bengals could do that easily with this running game.

It’s time to start using guys like Cosby and Bernard Scott in the passing game. Both can create matchup problems in the slot and get open over the middle, which we need without a viable TE on the active roster.

I agree with John, B Scott could be like “Everybody Hates Chris” Perry was in ’05; but again, missing Slim15 is killing us. That was the other half of the equation in ’05. You could see it when we ran Chad, TJ, Slim, and Chris out there, and the other team’s d-backs all looked like they were scrambling to figure out what to do. With this group now, we just don’t wreak that kind of havoc any more…

I think you have a point John, but the problem is, who do you put at right tackle. Obviously andre is the future and roland does well, but has his struggles at times. Plus, if anything, come playoff time, the way to beat those teams (namely colts and saints) are to control the clock with the run game. I personally love what we are doing. Other teams know we are running the ball and we still try to shove it down there throats.

I totally agree, I tried to make this point in another post. Since they just need 1 win and/or 1 loss by the Steelers and Ravens, the playoffs are in reach and they have some room to work on some things. Put Andre Smith in at RT and let him play, if he really struggles and you think Carson is going to get hurt, then you can take him out, otherwise let him learn the true RT position. Let the OL gel for the playoffs. Use the unbalanced line sparingly, but for the most part, line up in your base packages and just play. Simplify things to reduce penalties and confusion. Vikings and Chargers are good teams to open up the passing game against. Ochocinco and Caldwell should be the main options, Coles should play on running downs and in 3WR sets. I would also inactivate Coats and give Coffman a shot.

I’d open the game in Minnesota in the no huddle, scripted plays, move down the field and get the passing game going early. Get Farve thinking shootout, he tends to make mistakes when he presses, plus it takes AP out of the game.

I think this has caused some inconsistencies that have resulted in penalties…BUT I like what they have done. I think this week was a chance to get #71 as many snaps as possible (he played much better this week btw…and yes, it looks like he can pass block). But the thing that the rotation has done is we have soooo much depth on the o-line right now, with everyone pretty healthy.

So I like the bench strenghth this has created, you see other teams using the unbalanced formation in following the Bengals and I think this was a ploy to get players snaps, provide vanilla film to the opponents and it sets up well in the long run. My thought would be we’ll see a bit less of this in the next two weeks.

An unbelieveable season or what????!!!

Just read about 85 getting fined 30,000 for putting a hat on. WTF? Helmet to helmet hits draw fines of 10,000 or less, but if you dress up like Poncho Villa its 30 grand? Great to see that player safety is less important than keeping Ochocinco in check.

It reminds me of my high school football field. It was a very small town, but they had razor wire and a giant fence around the football field. I always wondered why? Scared someone would break in and………..god forbid……….play football. I wish the world would lighten up.

JT,

Do you ever get a chance to run your ideas by the coaching staff? It seems like you think a lot more logically than do the Bengals. Or at least 2 weeks ahead of the Bengals.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that in what has become a passing league, we are doing something unique, and that’s pound the rock incessantly, the way Baltimore and Pittsburgh did last year. But at some point, we’ve got to know our weaknesses and gameplan around them. The longer pass routes don’t work because Roland is garbage in pass protection and Coles gets no separation on the outside, so the middle is clogged for Caldwell. So we need to adjust and go with more short routes in the passing game, especially on early downs.

That, and activate Chase!! Coats is uncoordinated and should be put down.

Right now we are the Ohio State Buckeyes of the NFL. We’re playing “Tressel Ball” and it’s working for us. The thing is… when we had the wide open attack what did that get us?… It got us absolutely nothing, except for 05′! Let’s see how we do this week against a better opponent, where instead of playing down to our competition, we might play up? We’ve proven in the past that we can throw the ball when need be. So let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.

I kind of agree with you Ryan, it doesn’t matter how much you win by, you just have to win. My issue is that sometimes you do need to be able to pass the ball, and Palmer has struggled as of late. It would go a long way to help the team and Palmer’s confidence if they get it going again, even if for just a couple of drives. It would also cause teams to back off a little and open up the run game, Detroit played to stop the run and it worked pretty well for them considering they are playing with Detroit’s D and not Minnesota’s.

Also, the Defense is struggling with injuries. While it’s good to run ball control offense and give the D some rest, the Bengals will need to start scoring some points because they could struggle at times.

JT – my brother and I b|tched about the Coles signing as well – and exactly because Caldwell was really showing some stuff at the end of the season.

As for a deep threat… I would really like to see them activate Simpson at least for one game – let him run deep a couple of times in the 1st half and see if Carson can hook up with him. I can’t imagine he cannot run that route… and his speed is unquestionable… what could he open for the offense in just a few plays acting like “Mini Henry-Moss”?

The fine on Chad was way too much, I know it’s a repeat violation and it was advertised he would do something, but still, that is crazy. The stunt was short and stupid, it wasn’t worth anything at all that he did it. Not sure about the poncho and if that is allowed, but at the bench he can put on a jacket or cover up to stay warm. The Hat should have drawn a fine because it was not NFL Licensed, just not $30,000. In the future, he needs to wear only NFL Licensed gear. Maybe a nice Bengals Santa hat. Who knows, maybe there is an NFL Licensed Sombrero out there, they did play a game or 2 in Mexico.

Now if Chad had put it on and did a Mexican dance in the end zone, that would be a stunt. Chad can’t do that because it would get the team a 15 yard penalty. Or maybe over with the cheerleaders, not sure about a personal foul for that.

My main issue is this, why did the camera follow Chad all the way back to the bench? They don’t show fans running on the field; they should have a policy to not show off the field celebrations until after the game. Why isn’t the camera man, the producer, or Fox Sports fined for showing it?

I’m actually fine with the OL rotation. I believe they also rotated the LG position (Livings played 1st and 3rd quarters and Mathis 2nd and 4th quarters). I always wondered why the O-Line didn’t rotate players more. Those guys are huge, don’t they get tired?

As for the passing game, if they can clean up the penalites and remove any plays that involve throwing to Coats or Jeremi Johnson, we should be Ok. Not great but good enough to win some playoff games.

Whats the real word on Coffman? I just saw we put him on IR and signed Shaun Smith, good move for D-Line depth, but I seriously doubt Coffman had an ankle problem. I think this Shaun Smith move is to provide DL depth if Peko can’t go down the stretch or needs to go on IR. Also, if they haven’t used Chase now then they aren’t using him this year; thus they made up an injury to pave his way to IR. Can’t risk losing him by placing him on IR.

Chase may have bone spur issues but that isn’t why he isn’t playing.

JT – What do you think about Shaun Smith being resigned? I’m all for giving guys a second chance if there is little risk, but Shaun Smith might just be one too many for this team. I know he called and appologized to the Browns and Bengals for his previous transgressions, but based on what I’ve read about him and his comments, sounds like he not a great team first guy. Maybe he has learned, but I think he just wanted a job and found out no one else wanted him. I always thought he was a big body and good run stuffer, and I’m sure he can help with Peko out, but what is this going to do to the locker room?

Too bad about Chase, I really do think they could have used him, but maybe not. They wanted the roster spot so they came up with a reason for the IR, surely he could have played if they wanted him to.

You guys all really think they made up the Chase Coffman injury to get a roster spot? I cant see that happening. Palmer never did go on IR last year, and he was not going to play.

If the Bengals asked me to play I’d certainly give it a shot, but at 5’9″, 195 lbs, 33 years old, having never played football, not sure what they would want me to do for them. Maybe I could play saftey and run around the field like an outfielder, or I could do Kick and Punt coverage, but If I made it down there and made the tackle I’d probably puke on the guy then be carted off the field.
