Bengals have become the old Ravens

Bengals are using old Ravens formula.

Congratulations to the Cincinnati Bengals for sweeping the AFC North(6-0).   The game today against the Cleveland Browns wasn’t an ugly game.   It was pretty much what we saw from both teams all season.  The Browns are terrible on offense.  They have no QB. They have no play makers on offense, because head coach Eric Mangini traded their best players away.   The Browns are decent up front on defense, but their back seven players need a major upgrade.   Josh Cribbs is a game breaker but he is worn out and is starting to think about his contract being renewed.   So the Browns played how they normally play.  The Bengals on the other hand, controlled the clock and ran for over 200 yds. Their passing game is pretty much a “chain moving” passing game.   No deep threats and lacks players with speed to separate from defenders. WR Chad Ochocinco is still playing at a high level, but if teams take him away, Carson is struggling to get to other guys.   Partly because they are not getting open, and also because he is getting hit before he can get to that 2nd or 3rd read.   The running game is the best part of this offense.  Big OL to maul people and three RB’s to get yards and eat up the clock.

The Bengals defense isn’t on the field much, but when they are, they are making opposing offenses get out of their game plans quickly.   Mike Zimmer’s scheme is clicking and the players don’t get exposed very often.  If they keep playing the way they are, the Bengals D will be a Top 5 unit at seasons end.   Staying healthy and young players getting better will keep this unit strong.

Marvin Lewis is going to continue to ride the running game until it doesn’t work anymore.  The passing game will have to improve if and when the Bengals get to the playoffs.  All of the other top teams in the AFC can score points via the passing game, and if the Bengals D has an off day, the Bengals will struggle to win in the playoffs.  But I like where the team is sitting at this point.  They won today, but have plenty to work on.  They won’t get complacent.  The Chargers and Patriots are fighting the Bengals for the other bye in the AFC.  The Colts will get the top seed, so everyone will have to go through Indy to get to Miami.

Good call. So it took 6 years to get what we signed up for with Marvin Lewis. I loved the teams gameplan today. Very smart win.

Also loving Dennis Dixon. BAHAHAHAHAHA!

It would be nice to see some passing game consistency, but that OL really isn’t protecting Carson much at all.

JT,

You and others have stated that the Bengals have lacked deep speed at WR, and that is even more evident since Henry is out. My question is what about Caldwell? He had one of the fastest 40 times for WRs in his draft class. According to NFL.com, he ran a 4.37 which is only .02 sec from Desean Jackson. On the other hand, his shuttle time was faster than Jackson’s and he has a higher vertical. Did Andre all of a sudden get slower? Why not use him on more deep routes? Have the bigger and more physical Purify take the shots over the middle and send Caldwell on the deep routes. Is there something about Andre that we don’t know?

Yeah this OL seems to not be giving Carson any kind of time anymore. Think maybe this is a good time to try out Andre Smith to see if he can help at all? Something doesn’t seem to be clicking well with the pass protection. I’m getting pretty worried about Carson’s health if they continue to let guys get to him like this. It only takes one hit. We all know that.

Was good to see Andre out there but did not like the rotation of Roland for a play, Smith in for a play then Collins for a play. Roland is so tall that the defenders get under his pads and drive him right back into Carson too often. Time for Andre to prove he was worth the #6 pick over Michael Oher down the stretch this year.

Grundoleum – I think against the Browns Cincy must have felt they had an opportunity to pull that rotation off – but I agree. At this point put Smith in and see what’s up.

Brain – didn’t realize Caldwell’s stats – and I agree with what you’re saying, if he’s that fast – do it. If not, I suggest they activate Simpson and give him a deep route early in a game – let him show his speed and that at least makes the D think about him… I’m no coach though and am ok with being an idiot on these matters. :-)

The Browns looked bad on offense, it looks like they’ve started to copy what they Bengals have been doing with the extra Tackle, but didn’t really practice it much first.

It looks like other teams have started to figure out how to break through the OL, getting more pressure on Carson. I’m wondering if this is a change in the way the OL is playing, a change in the way the D is attacking the OL, or if it’s because Benson is out. If you go back to early in the season, the OL had similar problems. Evan Mathis took over at starting LG and Roland at RT and they started playing better, but that was also when Benson really started to gain respect as a top RB. Past 2 games, Benson is out, Livings is at LG, and they threw Smith into the rotation at RT.

Also, some of Benson’s comments have been a little alarming. I think someone needs to sit down and talk to him. Benson’s job is safe, make him feel safe, let him know he is the guy, but he needs to be okay with 15-20 carries a game so that he will stay fresh into the playoffs. Also, LJ is more of a threat to take away from Scott or Leonard than Benson. I’d be okay with Benson sitting out next week against Detroit so he will be sure to be ready for Minnesota. If Benson is active, who do the Bengals make inactive…Scott, LJ, or Leonard?

I think if Benson is healthy you absolutely deactivate Leonard. His role is almost non existent these past couple weeks. Please do not think I have forgotten the clutch plays he made early in the season. LJ was breaking off 10 or 12 yard carries every other carry. I would love to see him and Benson get 15 carries each. But as some one mentioned, I don’t think Cedric is interested in that.
As far as receiver is concerned, that is quite a dilemma. I see a major overhaul after this season. I don’t care if Caldwell is as fast as Usain Bolt the Bengals obviously don’t want to use him that way. Chad is getting taken out of games and Coles is really pretty average. The only impressive thing he really does is block downfield. If the team doesn’t keep Chris Henry and expand his role, I see them drafting a WR very early.

In NY, Coles has several long TD catches, not sure if they were bombs or yards after catch. Maybe Caldwell has speed and can do that too. It may not have as much to do with the WR and more to do with the plays called. They never threw to Henry long like they had in the past, we just assumed it was his injury. Maybe they are still using plays designed for TJ, or if they do go long, Palmer doesn’t throw there.

Caldwell has speed but I don’t see it on the field at this point. Yes he ran a 4.37 coming out of Florida, but have yet to see him go deep in the two years that I have been watching him.

Oher looks to be the best OL in this draft and the second best player overall behind Percy Harvin. Coming out I didn’t think that he could play RT after playing LT at Ole Miss. But a lot of teams missed on him, including the Bengals. I’m not a big fan of Andre Smith at this point. He has a lot of making up to do.

Simpson needs a shot to play. Purify is a good practice player, but playing in the games are much different. He is a good special teams player, yes, but WR, not yet. Gotta give your 2nd round pick a chance.

The Ravens actually ran this extra OL offense last year, the Bengals are copying them :) And the Chargers did it a lot when Coach Cam was there. Anyway, I think Livings is better than Mathis. I don’t think Mathis played that well when he was in there. He gave up pressure and big hits on Carson. Go back and watch the Green Bay game and a few games after. But the whole OL was protecting pretty well until the 2nd Steelers game. And yes, Bensons comments surprised me. He knows better than anyone, just play. He is the starter, no need to tell everyone that. But he is feeling LJ on his back. Marvin did the right thing by bringing LJ in, now he needs to talk to Ced about being a pro.

Talked to him bout 30 minutes ago. He said his rehab going well. Those things take time…the more time he has to recover without a setback the better.

JT, what is the rule on IR players with respect to playoffs? Are they allowed to bring anyone back that was on IR once playoffs start, or are they totally lost for the season? How is Chris Henry doing? Any contact from him?

Also, I know the guy is probably hated in Cincy, but hope Shaun Rogers recovers and is OK. He looked like he was in a lot of pain coming off on the cart into the tunnel Sunday. don’t really like to see any player get the cart treatment. even the bad guys.

Nope, IR guys cant come back. C Henry won’t be healthy by then anyway. He’s about 8 weeks out.

Yeah that looked ugly. Hate to see it. Shaun being so heavy will hurt his rehab, he should prob lose some weight and become lighter and more dominant.

I honestly felt very bad for him Sunday. Fans were really giving it to him, still mad about the horse collar and all, but he’s still a person. could tell by his face, he knew it was pretty bad. Side of the game I don’t care for.

Why they do that? The Bengals have the king of horse collar on their team :) the guy who the rule name made for. I don’t think it was a dirty play at all. People just hold their breath when Carson gets touched :)

it was a heat of battle thing, really i think. I think the rule is kinda stupid, just like the Kimo rule is. Goes totally against what players are taught from peewee ball, you make the tackle. Safety is fine, but what rule is there that keeps a guy like Odom’s injury from happening? They just say its part of the game. Probably should have let the CP injury go that route too.

It seems to me that the coaches are trying to turn Caldwell into TJ. They seem to have him running the same routes as TJ used to. Maybe they just want Caldwell to be more versatile. He was never known as much of a blocker at UF and now they have him mixing it up with DBs. I don’t know. The guy has speed. I saw it when he was in college. Speaking of WRs, Lapham, on the radio, hinted that he thought Coles is done. He is no where near the WR he was in NY and he looks every bit his age and then some. What do you think? Is that why you expect them to draft a WR high?

Well, both Ochocinco and Coles are up there in age for a WR, and Henry’s contract is up, given it can take 3 years for a WR to breakout, they need to draft another one this year or next, or do they?

Right now we don’t know if Simpson will work out. I would assume Coles will be kept another year at least due to salary cap hit. Ochocinco’s contract is up after 2011 season, and assuming he stays happy in Cincy we’ll assume he plays out the rest of his contract but is not resigned. I would also assume the Bengals will try to bring Henry back. So the plan for 2012 might be to have Henry and Caldwell as the starting WRs with 3-4 other guys that may or may not be on the team right now. Next year, they may have Ochocinco, Coles, Henry, Caldwell, Simpson, Cosby, Purify…. I doubt there is room for a high draft pick unless Henry is not resigned or Ochocinco or Coles is gone.

I don’t know who’s contracts are up at the end of the year (Peko, Joesph, Fanene?), I think there were a bunch, so it all depends on who they resign and what the needs are. Assuming they do resign thier core, S and TE should be high on the list of needs.

Normally this time of year, we are deep into the free agent/draft talk, but this is the first I’ve thought about it this year. Hopefully, I won’t put much thought into it until late February.

I was at the game Sunday and watched Andre Smith play and on just about every play he did not even engage with the defender (lookout block), needless to say I was not impressed. I certainly hope this is not what is to come in the future. JT your thoughts?

Ron E,
The only major FAs on D are Tank, Roy, BJ, Jeanty, Hodge, and David Jones. BJ and Jeanty, may fit under a loophole in the CBA that might make them RFAs again. Of that group, I think the team needs to bring back Tank and BJ. Jeanty and Hodge would be nice to keep too. Roy may be done, but if he is healthy and wants to come back then great. Jones? I am fine either way. Personally I think the team should draft another CB on day one. They need depth behind JJoe and Hall and maybe a possible replacement if we can’t afford to keep both. Fanene has another season before he is an FA. Peko signed an extension last year and is here til 2015. The attrition will be on offense. All of our guards are FAs of some kind.

Coles didn’t have it when they signed him. He was in decline. The Jets were unloading him and the Bengals signed him to send a message to TJ IMO. Bad deal, way too much money. No other team was offering that. Buffalo tried to sign him for less and the Seahawks were scared away.

What you say about Tank may be true, but that would leave little depth behind Peko and Sims if he goes. They were supposedly high on McDonald, but if he was so great, why bring back Harris? If Harris was so great, why did they trade him and then why didn’t anyone want him after? Tank, at least gives you a solid vet, who knows the system. I don’t see the team spending the money to go after someone better in FA. Do they draft a guy? Do they take Cody if he falls? Maybe the Williams kid from Tennessee?

Here’s a little scoop you will on;y find here…don’t tell anyone :) jk. McDonald would have made the team over Rucker if he was healthy in camp. He was the reason they moved Shirley to OG…he was hand picked by Marvin at the end of the draft because Marvin wanted a DT that could run and play tough inside. When he was hurt in camp, it actually helped the Bengals because no other team could see him play. They can keep him on practice squad and let him get better. The Bengals only use three true DT’s during the games because on passing downs they go with DE’s as the DT’s. Harris is here because he is a solid player, but also they can release him if they need the roster spot and not worry about anything. If it were McDonald, they would have to keep him and release another position….make sense? McDonald could be the 3rd guy next year. and they can draft another DT or two.
