SS Roy Williams
So a day after I predict my starting lineup for the Bengals defense, they go out and add SS Roy Williams(which I mentioned, but later). And they met with CB Rod Hood too, according to reports. So pencil in Roy Williams into the starting lineup at the SS spot next to FS Chris Crocker. Big hits are on the way! Wow. I just hope teams don’t get a chance to expose them in coverage. But Crocker is a former corner that can cover better than Williams. SS Chinedum Ndukwe will play in sub packages, replacing on of the LB’s, putting more speed on the field without losing any ability to play the run. FS Marvin White will get more time to recover from his knee injury. I have to believe that this move to bring in Williams was tied to his recovery time, that’s just me thinking out loud. If hood comes in, he would take over the 3rd corner post(which I mentioned, but later) and compete with Johnathan Joseph for the starting job. If JJoe is healthy and gets back to his form, he will be the starter hands down. Bengals fans have to be excited about the moves that the team has made this off season. I still hear fans talking about how upset they are with the team and owner Mike Brown, but this is the best off season that the team has had since I can remember(6 years). I’m even excited for Georgetown and I’m not even on the team. Ha ha. I wonder if that deal they were offering me is still on the table…….Hmmmm. Just kidding. I am looking forward to see how this all turns out. I predicted playoffs awhile back and I’m sticking to it. Now there are only two things left to do. Stop playing with OT Andre Smith and move him to right tackle(Anthony Collins will start at LT), and handle the OchoCinco situation. Go to camp one big united family ready to take on the NFL. Until next time……

Or maybe that ‘lunch’ (or whatever) you had with Marvin a few weeks ago unearthed some information….perhaps you are acting in a consulting roll? Scout?

[...] John Thornton thinks Bengals fans should be stoked by the signing. He pencils Williams and Chris Crocker in as the starting safeties. So pencil in Roy [...]

JT-
seriously how can they “handle” the Chad issue? Also can you pay a draft pick 10 mil a year to play RT? Are our RBs good enough??

That was my reasoning for not drafting a OT. But if you were going to draft one, take Andre because he was the best in the draft. But I think he should be on the right. Let Anthony collins play left and keep Whit at OG.

I think they need another durable back. Keep pushing Ced. Don’t let him get comfy, he plays better hungry

Lovin’ what you’re saying about the Bengals. It’s early, but you’re right. This offseason has to give you the feeling that the Bengals are going to be a team to contend with this season. And don’t worry about the Lotto. Nine of us put in 5$ every Tuesday and Friday. This past week we didn’t get one stinking dollar! Not one! I predict the Bengals in a Super Bowl in China before I hit that jackpot!

Give me one or two more CB’s and I’ll be happy . Preferably two. This team got deep with a few free agents and a quality draft . All the Bengals need is two more CB’s . Sorry, I already said that .

The two things that I think were left to the puzzle was trying to get a little more depth on the offensive line and also a cover safety. I think they should have paid a little more attention to those positions and the puzzle would be complete.I also think the defense is going to carry us this year until the middle to the end of the season after the o line gels and the offense gets compfortable with one another.Still kinda worried about Carsons blind side.I cant help but think if Levi was healthy and he could have done his job this year if it was worth cutting him for Roy,because thats obviously what happened. What does everyone on here think. Was it worth the trade off?

FINALLY!!!!! A little common sense with Andre Smith, I’m tired of all this stale thought that he is the 6th pick of the 1st round and will make $10M a year for the next 5 years and therefore has to play left tackle……BOLONEY!!!!! The object is to WIN Football games, not slot guys in positions that correspond to their salaries. The left tackle needs to be athletic to be able to provide pass support and not be a weak link in the run game, doesn’t have to be a bull dozer, Anthony Collins gets the job done. Andre Smith will be awesome on the right side and will be a bull dozer for the run game, ala Willie Anderson. Smith will be to Cedric Benson, what Willie was to Rudi Johnson. Yes, let the running game thrive and compliment the passing attack, a balanced attack of run and pass feeds one another, keeping the defense on their heels.

I might as well get this off my chest as well, moving Whitworth to Left Tackle, are you CRAZY!!!! I am again in total agreement with JT. Whit is developing into a Pro Bowl caliber guard, what advantage do you gain by moving him to Tackle and putting him in more space? He has shown that he struggles with the speed rushers, I don’t think he’s as athletic as Anthony Collins, so get the most out of his strengths at guard where he can combat the big ugly’s at defensive tackle and keep guy’s from crashing Carson’s knee and keep the holes open for the running game. WIN FOOTBALL GAMES!!!!!

I honestly can’t think of a more productively awesome offseason than this one. I haven’t been this pumped about the NFL season in a long LONG time.

With Williams, I just hope he’s not too slow, kind of like how Dexter Jackson was exposed the past couple of years. I guess Williams has some differrent skills and Zimmer will use him differently. I would guess that he’s great against the run and/or short routes over the middle. But if it is a pass, the DL had better get some pressure and the CBs and FS had better cover. Also, I hate to see the Bengals cut one of thier Safteys because they are all good special teamers. Tom Nelson another Saftey, is competing for the Punt Return job.
I don’t know much about Rod Hood, but I guess if he was a starter a couple of years, he should be an upgrade as a 3rd CB and give them quality depth.

Roy is a different player than Dexter. SS’s dont have to be fast. They have to be the 8th run defender. Dexter did a good job, but he was injured a lot. When he was in the box and blitzing, he had some great games. Roy is a bigger version. Like a LB that can run. Speed shouldnt be an issue in the AFC North. Who do you think is going to run away from him? This is a pretty slow division. No burners, mostly physical skill guys

The Bengals have so much talent and/or solid players with potential, they are going to have to cut some of these guys and other guys won’t be given enough field time to develop. I guess this is a good problem to have, but I hate for them to lose some of these guys to other teams. I think they’ve got the depth in place at many positions to handle the injury issues they’ve had in the past. What they need now is a few of the starters to step up and really take it to the next level. Geathers, Odom, Peko, Rivers, and Hall are the defensive guys I’m expecting big things from.
JT- I’m being selfish, but I would rather you stay in shape and ready to sign with the Bengals if they have injury issues. Might not be too bad to miss trainning camp and join them mid-season on the road to the Superbowl.

This offseason is proof that coaching talent draws playing talent. Hiring Mike Zimmer was the smartest thing this franchise has done in a LONG time. Tank Johnson and Roy Williams are here because they want to play for him again. I just hope the Bengals can hang on to him for a few more years before some other team wants to make him their head coach.

JT,
Quick prediction. What are the ways or way the Bengals are going to handle the OchoCinco situation?

Sit down with Ocho and iron it out. Marvin, MB, and Ocho. Honest heart to heart. No egos. Get it done. They all love each other. It can be fixed.

JT,
What are your thoughts about our O-line? We lost a lot in Willie, Levi, Eric G and Andrews in the past year. I am concerned for Palmer if for no other reasons chemistry and depth. Are you as concerned? Why or why not?

Wow, now the Bengals get another RB. Since the Bengals aquired Brian Leonard and see him as a possible 3rd down back more so than a fullback, where does that leave Kenny Watson? I’m not sure what happened to Watson last year, I know the team struggled, but many expected Watson to play like he did in 2007. I was giving Watson the inside edge as the 3rd down back because of his blitz pickup skills. For those that don’t remember, Brian Leonard was a high draft prospect in 2007 with a great story. He went into 2006 at Rutgers as a possible Heisman candidate, but moved to FB to block for Ray Rice. It was a nice trade since the Bengals would have probably had to cut Harris anyway.
