I get a lot of requests to talk about working out. If you need help, let me know. Not that I’m Billy Blanks or anything, but I can direct you in the right direction. I know trainers all over the place that would be happy to assist anyone who needed it. If you have specific questions, you can email me at john@allproblogger.com.
Most of my workouts are 1 hour long at a local gym in Cincinnati. I go 3x a week. That’s weightlifting the whole way through. You get a pretty good pump that way. You don’t over extend yourself and you always stay fresh. Sometime we do lighter weight and more reps, ans sometimes we go heavy weights with less reps. I’ll pick a body part that I want to work and we hit it. I’m not a heavy leg lighter but I do hit that area as well. Since I’m trying to lean out, cardio is huge. I do cardio about 5x a week. I do that at home. Sometimes I hit the treadmill and other times I hit the elliptical machine. I do it for about 30-45 min. That gives me a good sweat. And the diet is the final part. I get a protein shake in right after the workout so it can sink right in. I take other supplements as well, but it’s light stuff. One of my favorites is a dose of green tea in the morning. Eating a lot of lean foods will help you the most. You can eat more food if it’s clean(lean). And eating 4 to 6 times a day helps you from over eating at any meal.
Today was a upper body workout. Did lots of Biceps and Triceps. Some legs sprinkled in. I take pictures every few weeks so I can log them and see what kind of progress I’m making.

Dips

Biceps and lunges

JT – You say you want to lean out, it sounds like you’ve pretty much accepted that your playing days are over and not necessary to maintain the girth required for Defensive Tackle, or that your making the switch to Defensive End……..

what’s your max weight lifting? Just wondering what a NFL DT has to be able to lift in order to stick around for a long time.

I used to bench a lot. But thats overrated. Functinal strength is more important. Hands, legs, and being able to move. balance too. I used to bench around 510lbs at WVU. I had three shoulder surgeries in my career so the heavy weight wasn’t a good thing. I know strong bench guys that cant play

Accepted? I wouln’t put it like that. I lean out after every offseason. Learned tht from LaRoi Glover 11 years ago. It helps your body and helps you live longer. But yes, this off season I’m doing it a little while longer. I don’t have minicamp next week

Pretty empty gym. You’re not stinking the place out are you?
On a serious note, when i played alot of sport i found that too much “weight room” can slow you down. I was told it was to do with the “twitch” speed of muscle. Simply put, if you do large heavy slow reps, that is what your muscles are taught to do. If you do fast, agile active lifting then that it what your muscles become. So i just tried to use my muscles in situations i would find in gametime. Instead of leg-presses i would run up really steep hills, making sure to jump and turn and twist as well to get every muscle trained. Odd shaped objects are also meant to be good – like rocky chopping wood and lifting logs.
I guess that is why you see weight room strength and game strength being so different. Around draft time because it’s hard to differenciate between two guys real strength we all get glued to their bench press ability but it doesn’t really tell the full story. I mean, if the ability to lift the biggest weight made you a great DT then the draft would be simple. The same could be said about speed, if a fast 40 time made you a great WR then Al Davis and the Raiders would be the best team ever.

What is the protein shake you use? Do you use that after your weight training or cardio? or both?
